For your consideration, you are viewing a piece of Military History, this is an Argentine M1891 bayonet for use on the 7.65 mm. Argentine M1891 Mauser rifle. This is the later example with the Aluminium grips. The original prototype for the M1891 bayonet was heavier than the Argentines liked, so several design changes were made to lighten it (thinner blade, slimmer hilt, etc). Aluminium grips were included as part of the proposed weight-reduction effort. (as is this example) However, at the time the aluminium grips were not ready for production, so brass was temporarily substituted, so as not to delay production. The M1891 bayonets were produced in Germany by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum, & Co. of Solingen. Brass-gripped bayonets were made in 1892–93 (40,000 brass grips were produced). After which the production changed to aluminium grips, in mid-1893, Both the bayonets and scabbards had matching serial numbers as the rifles that they were issued with. The scabbards had the throat secured on the sides by two rivets. Argentina selected a 40 cm / 15.75-inch blade bayonet, expecting that Chile would choose a shorter 25 cm / 10-inch blade bayonet for their Mauser Rifles. The Argentina-Chile border is the world’s 3rd lengthiest international border and at the time, there were heightened apprehensions between Argentina and Chile over their shared international border. Some portions of the border remain in dispute to the present day. Most M1891 rifles and bayonets were exported to the USA in the 1950s and 1960s when Argentine export laws required that the national crest be ground away before being sold. (as is this example) # The makers and inspection marks are:

• RICASSO: MODELO ARGENTINO 1891 in an arc over Argentine Crest (ground) REVERSE: "Weyersberg" over "Kirschbaum & Co." over "Solingen"
• SPINE: "* over A"
• CROSSGUARD: "P over *" - REVERSE: "R"
• HANDLE: "M within a Circle"
• POMMEL: "RA inside an oval" representing Republica Argentina.
• SCABBARD: BALLTIP: "RA inside an oval" representing Republica Argentina.

CONDITION: This bayonet is Antique from circa 1890s, and is in good condition for its age and use in warfare. The ribbed aluminium grips are in very good condition with no missing pieces, and no indents but have some light scuff marks and fit tightly to the tang, the release/lock button is in working order. The 40 cm blade has a bright polished finish with no stains and no pitting. The edge is not sharp and has no dings. The remaining metal on the cross-guards, pommel and mortise has a bright polished finish with some scuff wear and an aged patina. The scabbard is in very good condition, it has a refurbished blackened finish with no dents and fits tightly together with the bayonet. # Please note that the photographs form part of the description; Super-sized photos are available for viewing in the eBay gallery, to show the finer details and conditions.
