You are viewing a genuine Antique piece of Military History, this Socket Bayonet is an Antique Nepalese Gahendra Socket Bayonet alone, (this does not come with a scabbard) for use with the calibre .577/450 Francotte and Gahendra rifles. The “Gahendra” is named after its developer, Nepalese military engineer General Gahendra Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana. It is a crude replica of the British Pattern 1876 bayonet, only with a larger diameter socket. The Gahendra and Francotte barrels had thicker walls than the Martini-Henry, making the outside diameter too large to accept the British Pattern 1876 bayonet. #NOTE: Will not fit British-made Martini-Henry rifles. The Nepalese “Francotte” reproduced an improved Martini-Henry design by Belgian maker August Francotte dating to 1877. The Nepalese rifles used Francotte’s detachable trigger and firing mechanism but without Francotte’s patented cocking indicator. The Nepalese Francotte rifles suffered from poor metallurgy and other defects, so were not a successful design. The bayonet measures an impressive 24 ¾” in length, with a triangular blade of 21 ¾”: Attached to the rifle this gives an impressive length of over six feet. The bayonet was locally manufactured in Nepal, but is well made, if a little crude. The blade of the bayonet is triangular in cross-section: The socket is wider in diameter to fit over the slightly thicker barrels of Gahendra and Francotte rifles which used wider barrel bodies to compensate for the poorer steel used in their construction when compared with British rifles. # The makers and inspection marks are:- RICASSO: "423" over "?34" handwritten in Devanagari Script Numerals
- ELBOW: "?380"
