For your consideration, you are viewing a piece of military history. This brass badge is a British Highland Light Infantry ASSAYE Military Cap Badge  The cap badge of a regiment is its most basic identifying emblem and much emotion is vested in such badges by members of regiments.
This badge is a pressed brass metal headdress featuring a diamond-cut "Star of the Order of the Thistle", it features an Imperial (King's) crown superimposed on the top of the upper point and has at its centre a French bugle horn, the twist of which encloses the monogram 'HLI'. Below the horn is a small scroll marked 'ASSAYE' and below that again, and over the lower point of the star, is an elephant standing on the ground. It has a pair of lugs on the reverse. Assaye is a small village in the Jalna district of the state of Maharashtra in western India. The village was the location of the Battle of Assaye in 1803, fought between the Maratha Empire and the British East India Company. It became the first real victory for the young general Arthur Wellesley #This Badge pattern was worn from 1881 to 1959 featuring different crowns. During the Cardwell/Childers reforms of 1881 the 71st (Highland Light Infantry) and the 74th (Highlanders) Regiments of Foot were amalgamated to form the Highland Light Infantry. The headdress badge adopted was based on the Star of the Order of the Thistle with the Light Infantry bugle horn in the centre, and the monogram "HLI" in the centre twist. An imperial crown was superimposed over the upper point of the Star and at the lower point a scroll carrying ASSAYE above an Elephant on the ground. The Thistle Star and the bugle horn both derived from the 71st and the Elephant with scroll is derived from the battle honour awarded to the 74th for their fine showing at that battle in September 1803. In 1923 the Regiment was re-designated the Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment), with no change to the badge. In January 1959 the Regiment reluctantly amalgamated with the Royal Scots Fusiliers to become the Royal Highland Fusiliers, somewhat oddly becoming part of the Lowland Brigade. They wore the Brigade's badge.
