For your consideration, you are viewing an antique piece of Military History, this is a French briquet Short Sword and it is a scarce example contained within its original era leather scabbard, this sword has been dated 1828 on the spine and it has a 59.5cm curved blade, a regulation brass hilt with D-shaped knuckle guard and ribbed brass grip, struck with an anchor mark, and it comes with a brass mounted leather scabbard. This style of sword was carried by the French infantry throughout the Napoleonic Wars and also adopted by many European nations during the 19th Century.  The French Briquet Short Sword, or Cutlass were one of the most common French infantry swords used during the Napoleonic Wars. This sword features a thick carbon steel blade with a very solid brass D guard quillon hilt.  This French Briquet infantry short sword was reproduced by many militaries at the time and is the pattern that was used for the Dutch Naval Cutlass Scheepssabel M1818 No2. The d'Armes de Châtellerault was a French-owned weapons manufacturer in Châtellerault, Vienne. Created by a royal decree in 1819 to manufacture swords, and after 1850, it manufactured firearms and cannons. In 1840 Antoine Treuille de Beaulieu developed the concept of rifled artillery at Châtellerault for the French Army. The Lebel Model 1886 rifle, the first military firearm to use smokeless powder ammunition and the primary French infantry weapon during World War I, was developed and produced here. In 1829, the 44 workers of Châtellerault produced 6000 swords # The makers and inspection marks are:
