For your consideration, you are viewing a Vietnam War British Army Ammunition Box. This ammunition box dates to 1966 and its official designation is H82 Mk1. The H82 is a remarkably strong ammunition box. This particular ammo box is a smaller model that was used for belted small-arms ammunition rounds. A belt of 200 7.62 rounds of ammunition fit nicely inside a H82 Mk1 box. This is a heavy metal tin that has a brown khaki base paint and yellow stencilled writing on the front. The markings were added using either rubber stamps or stencils and yellow paint. The hinged lid of the box has a folding carry handle, which is on moveable wire fasteners so it stows flat against the top of the ammunition box for easy storage. On the left side is a clip fastener which secures the lid. This fastener also allows the ammunition box to be mounted on the side of a weapon, so that the ammunition can be directly fed from it, into the breech of the machine gun. The contents are marked on the side in yellow paint, 200 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. The markings indicate that for every four ball rounds, there is a single tracer round and that the rounds are linked together. The ball ammunition is L2A2 whilst the tracer is L5A3. The rear of the box has another small stencilled mark, which is the lot number for this batch of ammunition.
The embossed details on the side of the box ensured the original date of manufacture was not lost. Unfortunately, it has been common practice to paint and overspray these ammunition boxes. Most of the boxes that you find, for sale have the details over-painted or multiple issues printed on the outside, this box is unusual in that it has only been used once and still retains all its original paint, markings and stickers. This type of box is one of the smallest ammunition boxes and doesn’t take up too much room. Postwar ammunition boxes make an engaging and useful item for collectors. Most of these boxes are now over 50 years old. #The makers and inspection marks are:

PROVENANCE: Museum Exhibit from the private collection of the late Doug Bradbury's Estate, formally exhibited in the Bradbury's Private "UK Horseshoeing Museum" at Clay Cross #Doug Bradbury FWCF (1937 - 2020) was a lifelong resident of Clay Cross in England and from this modest heritage, Bradbury became internationally known as a "Master Farrier." The great-grandfather set up his farriery and forge in Clay Cross and later opened a private museum dedicated to the farriery craft, known as the "UK Horseshoeing Museum" Doug Bradbury was headed for a career underground in the Parkhouse Colliery in his home village of Clay Cross. “It was either down the pit or in the army,” Doug learned to shoe underground in a coal mine, His family expressed: “Doug is known worldwide, and has travelled to many countries to help teach farriers and or to shoe horses on assignment. In 2002 Doug retired at age 65 and was able to dedicate more time to the museum. The museum attracted horse people from far and wide. The Museum has many interesting collections relating to military farriery in both World Wars, the exhibits cover all the special needs of horses working the streets, and mines, and tasks that required special traction, such as ice and snow or maneuvering through deep mud in bogs. Bradbury was granted the title of Member of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of his services to the farriery profession by Queen Elizabeth II, who announced  "Doug Bradbury is far from inactive; he has transformed the old forge offices into a carefully-curated museum of farrier history, known as the UK Horseshoeing Museum, and offers colourful and interesting “The Life of a Farrier” lectures to groups across the British Isles." In 2018, Doug was awarded an MBE for his services to the farrier profession also presented to him in May 2018 by HRH Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace.
