For your consideration, you are viewing an Antique Circa 1890s piece of Italian military history. This bayonet is an M1891 Italian Carcano Mannlicher Bayonet and Scabbard and was designed for use on the 6.5 mm M1891 Mannlicher or Carcano rifles and most of the M1891 carbines. This bayonet will not mount to the M1891 Cavalry Carbine (Moschetto da Cavalleria), 2nd model M1891 TS Carbine (Moschetto per Truppe Speciali), or the M1938 Short Rifle (Fucile Corto). These models have bayonets made specifically for them. Scabbards can be leather with either brass or steel mounts, with either a leather-covered ribbed or smooth steel body. This example has Brass Mounts and a ribbed leather-covered body. On entering WW1 Italy found itself short of arms so to facilitate supplies many of the old Vetterli Model 1870 bayonets were shortened and their hooked quillon was removed, to conform and fit the Carcano rifle. Successively the M1891 Carcano replaced the Vetterli-Vitali rifles and carbines, these bayonets date from 1891 and were still in use in 1945 WW2, and have had nearly 50 years of service life, as it was the standard rifle bayonet of the Italian Armed Forces in both World Wars. This has no manufacturer stamp but it was most likely manufactured by "Fabbrica D'Armi Di Terni" or translated "Firearms Manufacturing of Terni" The pommel has a push-button lock/latch and T slot for attachment to the rifle, with 2 piece wood grips attached to the tang with 2 rivets. It has a straight quillon with a ball finial with a muzzle ring of 12.5 mm. A straight 12" blade with a single edge and fuller to both sides which ends within 75 mm from the spear point tip end. # The makers and inspection marks are:- CROSSGUARD: "PS 1942"
- TANG: "5 within a circle" - "? within a circle" - "P"
