For your consideration, you are viewing a fixed-blade Knife, this is a Camillus Fixed Blade Pilots Survival Knife (aka BOLT knife), the second version of the Jet Pilot Knife (JPK) aka Pilots Survival Knife in its final, 5-inch size (from 1961.) This comes with its original brown-coloured leather sheath with a belt loop, a snap closure strap and a pocket to hold the sharpening stone. These were popular during the Vietnam War. The Pilots knife was favoured and commonly purchased by military personnel for use by soldiers stationed in Vietnam, who did not have easy access to government-issued JPK’s and were widely used in the 60s and 70s by a lot of our servicemen. Each knife is manufactured per US Government specifications and features a 5" 1095 carbon steel clip-point sawback blade with a swedge, false top edge and fullers. The handle is made from stacked natural leather washers with a steel Hex butt cap. The JET PILOT KNIFE (JPK): Also known as the “Air Force Survival Knife” and the later models were “Ontario 499” This knife is one of the most famous fixed blades ever sanctioned by the U.S. Military. Military Fighter jet aircraft didn't take to the skies until the later days of WWII, and it wasn’t until the 1950s that the U.S.A.F. pursued a jet-powered fleet. After seeing that Pilots could be shot down behind enemy lines, the U.S. Department of Defence issued the “Military Specification Document MIL-K-8662" issued in October 1953. Inside this document, were the specifications to develop an Air Force Survival Knife: A tool that would help pilots escape downed aircraft and also be used as a sheathed hunting knife to help a pilot’s chances of survival. The Department of Defense specifically demanded the Air Force Knife be capable of stabbing and chopping through an aluminium hull. That’s why this blade is serrated and ground with a broad clip point and wide bevel and this design was also designed to fit into a tiny paddle and tiny raft, just in case one was ejected over water. The hex pommel acts as a hammer and is used to smash out the windows of downed aircraft. Camillus produced the USAF Pilots' knives, including the 1st version which had a 6″ blade (from 1959 to 1961) which was before the Military specs were updated, requiring a 5″ blade.CONDITION
This fixed-blade Camillus Survival Pilots Knife is 1960s Vintage and it is Pre-Owned and it is in Good Condition for its age and use. The leather stacked washers on the grip are clean with a light-aged patina and undamaged, the hex is fixed tightly and has been given a coat of grey paint to the end. The crossguard is straight and has a lightly worn-blued phosphate finish. The parkerised deep blued blade finish is showing some wear on the edges, the metal is without pitting and has no dings to the edges, it shows faint sharpening/sheathing marks to the edges, and the saw teeth and the point are sharp. The tan brown leather sheath is in good working condition and all the stitching, and studs are firmly attached, the hilt strap is undamaged and the press studs close firmly. The sharpening stone has been used and looks like a small end piece has broken off. # Please note: The Photographs form part of the description; Super-sized photos can show the finer details and conditions.- Photos do not show the actual size so please read the description page for the exact measurements.
