For your consideration, you are viewing a piece of Military History, this is an Antique Military Issue French Chassepot M1866 Bayonet & Scabbard. It would have been used during the Franco-Prussian War also known as "The War of 1870" which started on July 19th 1870 and raged up until May 10th 1871. This sword bayonet was for use on the 11 mm. M1866 Chassepot needle-fire rifle. The M1866 rifle was referred to as the Chassepot, after its inventor, Antoine Alphonse Chassepot. Manufactured from 1866 until after the introduction of the 1874 Gras. I believe that this would have been from the Third Republic. This bayonet is from the Yataghan series of bayonets and has a brass hilt with a spring steel latch on the right side. The cross-guard is steel and is tightened by a screw on the muzzle-ring. The quillon is a hooked blade breaker type. The blade is steel, single-edge which has been fullered on both sides, with a re-curved or double-curved Yataghan blade. "Yataghan" comes from the Turkish word for "one who lays down" to describe the downward sweeping double curve blade. The double-curve added strength and rigidity while keeping the hilt and point in alignment for thrusting efficiency. # The makers and inspection marks are:
  • CROSSGUARD: "H 37419"
  • BLADE SPINE: "Mre Impale de Chat 7bre 1868" RICASSO: "CROWN S" and "F" oval inspection marks.
  • SCABBARD: "H 37419" MATCHING NUMBER
