For your consideration, you are viewing a piece of Military History, which is a Bayonet that comes with scabbard. This is a German / Turkish Ersatz Bayonet that would have started its life as a Seitengewehr M1898/05 aA or Sg98/05 aA Butcher Sawback Sword Bayonet before it was supplied to Turkey to be Turked! The saw teeth have been ground back and removed and the blade has been shortened to 10 cm, with a new crossguard to suit a Turkish M1935 bayonet for use with the 8 mm. Mauser M1893 and M1903 rifles. #"Ersatz" (translates to "substitute" in English) bayonets. These bayonets, were for many years said to be the last-ditch bayonets made by the Germans at the end of WWI to reduce production costs and time. However, it is now widely accepted that the opposite was the case with the bayonets being manufactured during the early years of WWI, in Germany. At the beginning of WWI, there were not enough regulation bayonets to equip the existing and rapidly expanding German army. The Ersatz Bayonets were manufactured by local smiths in their workshops, the final result was hundreds of variations. The German specification was for a 12-inch blade. German-made ersatz bayonet blades typically have a single Fraktur inspection marking on the ricasso or blade spine. In addition to newly constructed bayonets, Ersatz Bayonets were also created by modifying captured bayonets of other countries. No manufacturers are attributed to most of the bayonets and it is thought that many were assembled from parts from a large number of factories making parts. Hilts varied considerably in style and the method of manufacture, from formed to cast. The materials consisted of brass, sheet metal, and cast sheet. The Blades's position also varied as well as the style of fullers (some had no fullers as has this example.) The saw-back was carried by engineers, pioneer troops non-commissioned officers (NCOs) machine gunner crews and others, as a symbol of rank. Allied propaganda had a field day with the “Terrible Hun Saw Back Butcher Blades”, because of the terrible wounds it inflicted but actually, it was used as a distinctive blade for NCOs and as a saw for cutting wood wire fence posts etc. The saw-back became very unpopular on both sides of the front line; this blade caused extreme injury, pain, suffering and inevitably death. The German army was informed that the French and British soldiers would torture and kill German soldiers found with a sawback bayonet. For this reason, Germany issued an order in 1917 that all saw-backs be removed from service. Many of the rarer saw-backs had the teeth ground off and became a butcher blade style. Again, making any remaining saw-backs indeed very rare bayonets. # The makers and inspection marks are:
  • RICASSO: "WAFFENFABRIK" over "MAUSER AG" over "BERNDORF A.N"
  • POMMEL: "CROWN" over "U" Imperial German inspectors mark
  • WOOD GRIP: "A B N"
CONDITION: This German Turkish bayonet is from circa 1910s, and it is in good condition for its age and use in warfare. The grips are in very good condition, one grip has been marked with "A B N" with no missing pieces, indents or marks and fits tightly to the tang, and the release/lock button is in working order. The 10 cm blade has a Polished finish with an aged patina with some light stains and a little pitting on the bottom of the blade near the crossguard. The edge is not sharp and has no dings. The remaining metal on the cross-guards, pommel and mortise has a bright polished finish with some scuff wear, indents and an aged patina. The steel scabbard has a refurbished blackened finish with no dents and fits tightly together with the bayonet. # Please note that the photographs form part of the description; Super-sized photos are available for you to view in the eBay gallery, to show the finer details and conditions.
